Snyder Apologizes To People Of Flint During State Of The State Address

The White House is appointing a Health and Human Services Department official to lead federal efforts to help the city of Flint, Michigan, deal with its water crisis.

"Anytime you have people working for you, you have to take responsibility", said Governor Rick Snyder.

Snyder said during the radio interview this morning that by releasing his e-mails from 2014-2015, people will get the answers to those questions.

The $28 million would pay for more filters, bottled water, school nurses, intervention specialists, testing and monitoring.

Obama signed an emergency declaration Saturday that could get Flint up to $5 million in federal funds.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder said he has failed Flint residents but pledged to take new steps to fix the city's drinking water crisis, starting with committing millions in state funding and deploying more National Guard members.

Speaking Tuesday on a conference call organized by Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign, Weaver said she came to Washington hoping to secure more federal support for her city. Weaver met earlier with White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett and Obama's Director of Intergovernmental Affairs Jerry Abramson.

Flint was under control of a state-appointed emergency manager when, seeking to save money, it switched its source of tap water from Detroit's system to the nearby Flint River in 2014.

An Environmental Protection Agency spokeswoman told Reuters on Tuesday that the federal agency did not act fast enough in addressing the growing problem in Flint after hitting resistance from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality on how the city's water should be treated with chemicals to prevent corrosion of lead pipe connections.

With temperatures well below freezing, the vigorous crowd yelled at the top of their lungs to protest Snyder for creating a water crisis in Flint. He also said this would not be the last time he asks for money from the budget.

Flint returned to using Detroit's water in October after tests found elevated levels of lead in the water and in the blood of some children.

"They were staring at a public health emergency, and they sat on it for over 10 months", he said, further criticizing leaders who assured residents the water was safe when they knew it wasn't true.

"While the water supply has been switched back to Detroit's, the government malfeasance that led to this state of emergency in Flint must be addressed". Many of his other priorities - except the mounting financial problems in Detroit's state-overseen school district - were shelved from the speech due to the crisis.

"I am calling upon my fellow Michiganders and seekers of justice everywhere", Moore said in an open letter to Governor Snyder, " to petition U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch, asking her to arrest you for corruption and assault (i.e., the physical assault you committed against the children of Flint when you knowingly poisoned them).

The crowd chanted "Clean water!" and "Snyder must go!" near the Michigan Capitol Building. It causes brain damage, especially to children.
