Kenya in 'search and rescue' as Shebab claims 100 killed

A Kenyan soldier, who Kenya Defence Forces said was injured in the attack by al-Shabab in Somalia earlier this week, walks from the airplane to a waiting ambulance after being airlifted back to Nairobi for medical treatment, in Kenya Sunday, Jan. 17, 2016.

Al Shabaab insurgents on Sunday said they had captured Kenyan troops during last week's attack at an AMISOM base in El-Adde, Somalia.

"We are determined to bring our soldiers home".

Kenyan officials haven't said how many soldiers were killed when Islamic extremist fighters attacked a base for African Union peacekeepers in southwestern Somalia on Friday. The operation is "delicate" because some Kenyan soldiers have been captured and are being used as human shields, he said. Al-Shabab members have carried out many deadly attacks inside Kenyan territory. But al-Shabab said more than 100 Kenyan soldiers were killed, AFP reported.

Kenyatta has repeatedly said he would not be coerced into withdrawing Kenyan forces from Somalia, saying the troops are protecting Kenya.

The armed group, which has ties with al-Qaida, opposes Kenya's military involvement in Somalia and describes Kenyan peacekeepers as invaders.

Al-Shabaab has however, vowed reprisal attacks in the country, mainly targeting security forces in border towns of northern Kenya where dozens of people have been killed in landmine and grenade attacks blamed on the militant group.

The statement also said the attack was conducted by Commander Saleh An Nabhani battalion in retaliation to what it termed as continued extra judicial killings and persecution of Muslims in Kenya. "The EU will continue working with the Somali authorities, the AU and other partners to enhance stability and Somalia's capacity to fight terrorism".

"We embarked on a search, rescue and recovery operation as a priority", Gen. Samson Mwathethe, Kenya's military chief, told reporters Sunday in a press statement.

AMISOM and Kenyan forces had said al Shabaab attacked a Somali National Army base and AMISOM forces counter-attacked.

Messi and Suarez to miss Barca's Cup game at Bilbao
He gifted the ball back to Athletic, and Aduriz turned home a cut-back to half the deficit with a minute remaining. Bilbao will need a much better defensive effort to slow down Barcelona's historic attacking trio.
