For the world's most scrutinized body, changes for Barbie

Life in the Barbie Dreamhouse just got more interesting with the unveiling of three new body types and a wider array of complexions for the classic doll. Now, in addition to the new body types, the brand has added 7 additional skin tones, 18 hairstyles and 18 eye colors, because eye color diversity is also very important.

Barbie, Mattel's biggest brand, has fallen on hard times in recent years.

That someone was Evelyn Mazzocco, head of the Barbie brand, who in 2014 took up the challenge of developing a doll that more accurately reflected the variety of female bodies.

The new body types were in the works for the past two years, said Mattel spokeswoman Michelle Chidoni.

In 2015, the company revealed a less drastic expansion by introducing dolls with more skin tones and flat feet.

The new dolls will go on sale in Spring 2016, but toymaker Mattel warned, much like real life: "Not all clothes will fit all dolls".

The new tall, curvy and petite dolls mark the first time toymaker Mattel has given buyers an alternative to the traditional slim, busty shape since Barbie hit the shelves in 1959. The new dolls provide a wealth of new options of kids with the countless new combinations of skin tone, body type and hair cut, color and texture.

Barbie is one of the most iconic toys of the 20th and 21st centuries, and her influence on popular culture shouldn't be underestimated.
