For the world's most scrutinized body, changes for Barbie
By Norman Tucker Jan 29, 2016Life in the Barbie Dreamhouse just got more interesting with the unveiling of three new body types and a wider array of complexions for the classic doll. Now, in addition to the new body types, the brand has added 7 additional skin tones, 18 hairstyles and 18 eye colors, because eye color diversity is also very important.
Barbie, Mattel's biggest brand, has fallen on hard times in recent years.
That someone was Evelyn Mazzocco, head of the Barbie brand, who in 2014 took up the challenge of developing a doll that more accurately reflected the variety of female bodies.

The new body types were in the works for the past two years, said Mattel spokeswoman Michelle Chidoni.
In 2015, the company revealed a less drastic expansion by introducing dolls with more skin tones and flat feet.
The new dolls will go on sale in Spring 2016, but toymaker Mattel warned, much like real life: "Not all clothes will fit all dolls".
The new tall, curvy and petite dolls mark the first time toymaker Mattel has given buyers an alternative to the traditional slim, busty shape since Barbie hit the shelves in 1959. The new dolls provide a wealth of new options of kids with the countless new combinations of skin tone, body type and hair cut, color and texture.
Barbie is one of the most iconic toys of the 20th and 21st centuries, and her influence on popular culture shouldn't be underestimated.
What do you think of Barbie's makeover?
She made her debut 50 years ago, but Barbie is just starting to look relatable to a larger group of young girls.
Mattel's failure to change Barbie's body size had drawn a lot of criticism, but the company long defended the design. Petite Barbie! Tall Barbie!
A little over a year ago, it created its Toy Box division to fast-track new products, like the talking Hello Barbie doll, which the company has also used to signal that it can be as technically adept and innovative as its competitors.
