Oculus Rift Releasing in April for $599

The unit comes in at a $599 price tag which is on the high end of where we thought it would land, though Oculus insists that this hardware is heavily subsidized.

You can pre-order now from the Oculus shop, where orders are limited to one per customer. Oculus, which Facebook bought in 2014 for US$2 billion, began accepting pre-orders for the device on Thursday. The leading virtual reality company, Oculus, opened preorders for its flagship VR headset the Oculus Rift. If you backed the Rift on Kickstarter (and spent enough for a development kit), you don't need to worry - Oculus is giving you a consumer edition for free.

The $599 package will come with the Rift headset, sensor, Oculus Remote, cables, an Xbox One controller, as well as two games: EVE: Valkyrie and Lucky's Tale.

However, the touch controller, a pair of motion controllers, would be delayed and shipped only in the second half of 2016, the company had said.

The Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) is launching in a total of 20 countries in three months' time.

The headsets will start shipping to those who pre-order now from March 2016, according to the website.

This was all explained last night by Oculus founder, Palmer Luckey on Twitter, where he said: "Good news, everyone: When you preorder Rift, you also reserve your spot for Touch preorders". HTC's Vive headset is now expected to hit markets in April this year and Sony, too, plans to release its PlayStation VR that will be used with the PS4 gaming console.
