Is Zika Virus In New York?

The authorities repeated their call to pregnant women to take all the hygienic and precautionary measures to avoid contagion with the virus.

Dr. Benjamin Schwartz, deputy director of L.A. County's acute communicable disease control program, says local doctors and residents have reached out to his department for advice, adding, "Anytime there is an infection that is associated with a serious birth defect, it's certainly something that concerns a lot of people".

This is what prompted the Salvadoran vice minister of health to tell women there not to get pregnant for two years.

The virus has "exploded" in South America within the last three years, he said.

The new locations are Barbados, Bolivia, Ecuador, Guadeloupe, Saint Martin and Guyana; Cape Verde, off the coast of western Africa; and Samoa.

State officials have said they don't believe that the Zika virus, discovered in Uganda in 1947, is an immediate threat to Texas, but many questions remain unanswered.

However, only six cases of microcephaly have been undisputedly linked to the Zika virus there. We do not know whether those travel insurance companies are providing coverage when a pregnant cruiser cancels and submits a claim.

Patton said the specific types of mosquitoes, Aedes Aegypti and Aedes Albopictus, that are known to carry the Zika Virus are not in South Dakota. In addition, travelers should wear long sleeves and trousers, preferably treated with permethrin, and stay in places with air conditioning or window screens.

In the USA there are confirmed cases of the virus among individuals who have traveled to infected countries, including in Illinois, Florida and Texas, among others. The CDC said that pregnant women in any trimester should consider postponing travel to the areas where transmission of the virus is ongoing.

In the Peruvian capital Lima, authorities disinfected a big cemetery for fear that Zika-bearing mosquitos were breeding in the flower pots.

Brazil said the number of babies born with suspected microcephaly - or abnormally small heads - had reached almost 4,000 since October. Many people are not even aware they have been infected.

The intrauterine transmission of the virus from mother to unborn fetus has been confirmed with laboratory tests.

The Salvadoran government has urged women to avoid getting pregnant until 2018, saying that the biggest challenge is to avoid spreading the virus.

"The link between the Zika and the microcephaly...is still being investigated", Lindmeier said, but acknowledged that Zika "seems the strongest candidate".

Officials say one of the patients is fully recovered and the two others are recovering without complications. Brazilian disease specialists also said earlier this week that more patients who may have been infected with Zika virus have been diagnosed this year with Guillain-Barré syndrome, the New York Times reported.
