Leonardo DiCaprio talks The Revenant Oscar chances: 'It's beyond your control'
By Veronica Peterson Jan 21, 2016However, the Oscar nominations did include at least some acknowledgement of lesbian and transgender roles, as the movie Carol had the star Cate Blanchett recognized for her role as a lesbian, and the movie The Danish Girl, about a transgender woman, was nominated.
DiCaprio is considered Variety's most likely to take home Best Actor, though the thought of the 41-year-old ever bringing home an Oscar seems to be pure wishful thinking to most at this point.
Yet "Concussion" was overlooked entirely; the only nomination for "Creed" went to a supporting actor, Sylvester Stallone; and "Compton" landed just one nomination, for its white writers.
The nominees announced Thursday mark the second year in a row of controversy over the lack of racial diversity in the major categories.
Action adventure "Mad Max: Fury Road" won film of the year with the movie's George Miller taking the director of the year award. When you really put your heart and soul and time into something, and a film that, I will say, is not something that we get to see coming out of Hollywood very often. In November, Lee was awarded an honorary Oscar, and for the February 28 ceremony, Reginald Hudlin is a producer and Chris Rock is the host.
Cheryl Boone Isaacs, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, admitted it was a disappointing situation. "I loved the experience of making it so it's ultimate cherry on the cake to be nominated". "It's a party I didn't expect to be invited to".
Other winners at the Critics' Circle Film Awards included "45 Years" co-stars Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay who took the actress and actor of the year prizes. "We were screaming like idiots in the pitch black with the smell of waffles in the room". "Star Wars" may have set a domestic box office record with $822 million and counting, but "Room", with a minuscule $5.2 million to its name, was the bigger Oscar force. That film was released in late November, long after campaigning had begun for other eventual best-picture nominees like "Room".
Netflix's first original feature, Cary Fukunaga's "Beasts of No Nation", was shut out.
Winslet, 40, who also starred with DiCaprio in "Revolutionary Road" in 2008, is herself Oscar-nominated for "Steve Jobs" in the best supporting actress category. This has been a great year in film, it really has across the board, she told entertainment website Deadline.
