New Cleveland Browns coach wants to move on from Johnny Manziel

Jackson becomes the Browns' sixth coach since 2008.

With the coach's years of experience in the division and as accomplished a resume as anyone the Browns have hired of late, there's reason for optimism as the Jackson era in Cleveland begins. The Browns fired Mike Pettine after a 3-13 season.

The Browns were the second team to interview Jackson on Sunday in the hours after the Bengals suffered a shocking last-minute home loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Wildcard round of the AFC Playoffs at Paul Brown Stadium, and they were the last to do so.

CLEVELAND (AP) - Hue Jackson strolled into the Browns' facility unafraid, brimming with optimism.

Jackson doesn't mind the mess. "He was able to push me", Dalton said Wednesday. "And boy, what a challenge".

Cleveland hired Hue Jackson Wednesday, and Harbaugh praised the addition of his former assistant.

The stance runs contrary to reports that say Jackson told the Browns' brass in his job interviews he wants Manziel off the roster. "There"™s something to be said of picking from the Bengals"™ coaching tree. "I can't worry about what's happened before me".

But before Jackson had a chance to speak with another team, Haslam, who skipped the owner's meetings in Houston to focus on finding his coach, decided during a meeting with him in Cincinnati on Tuesday that he was done talking to candidates.

"This is our man", Haslam told them.

Jackson took over as the Oakland Raiders' head coach in 2011 and went 8-8 in his lone season before being fired at the end of the year. That means the Browns could look to grab one with the second overall pick this May in the NFL Draft. "I know what I signed up for". Jackson said he is not familiar with the 2016 quarterback class yet but expects that to change quickly. There's a lot of work to do. That's how I get judged and I respect that.

Whether quarterback Johnny Manziel will assist Jackson remains an open-ended question.

Manziel, the No. 22 pick in 2014, made strides on the field this season but continued to stumble off it. The likely final straw came when he missed a concussion treatment the day of the season finale and was unable to be reached by members of the organization. Manziel has been a major distraction during two drama-filled seasons with the Browns.

To the press, Jackson was obviously less adamant, but quite neutral: I need to get in this building and have an opportunity to sit down and watch tape. "I don't know Johnny personally, I know who he is, but at the same time I think I have to give everybody on our football team the fair opportunity to see who they are, to truly learn who they are and then make decisions from there".

Cleveland's first win in 2016.

Jackson has earned praise for his work with Bengals veteran quarterback Andy Dalton, so how he handles Manziel - if he handles him at all - will be a key story line in the new coach's tenure. I know. This wouldn't be the first pledge of collaboration heard in Berea in January. Jackson brings a fresh start - for the Browns and for himself. "I wish him the very best 14 times each season". The Bengals were among the league's most exciting offenses with a solid balance and quick-strike capability. "Jackson doesn"™t guarantee success at a position that is so hard to gauge, but it increases substantially the Browns"™ odds of finding the right one. The Browns have been stuck in a cycle of losing since their expansion rebirth. One name he may be giving up next season is that of Cleveland Brown's quarterback. "We're going to chase greatness here, that's for sure. Eventually everybody's going to be doing what we're doing".
