Microsoft ends 'tech support, security updates' for Internet Explorer`s older versions

Windows 10 comes with a new browser called Microsoft Edge. Windows users should check whether their browser is up-to-date. Most people blame Microsoft's practice of pre-installing Internet Explorer with Windows starting in 1997, which contributed to a lengthy antitrust suit. The 7 and 8 versions will be discontinued.

Tech support and software updates for Windows 8 stopped on 13 January 2016.

The company has done it rather quickly, as they consider the Windows 8.1 Upgrade as a service pack, and as per their terms and conditions they can end support for older generation of windows devices two years after the release of a new service pack. It described Windows 8.1 as "similar to how customers deploy service packs", while instituting a 24-month service pack-like policy. Internet Explorer 11 was never made available for Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012; those operating systems are both limited to Internet Explorer 10.

It was recently announced that over 200 million users are now using the Windows 10 OS.

Along with the upgrade notification, the patch will include the browsers' final security patches.

"It is safe to assume that cybercriminals have been stockpiling IE vulnerability information ahead of the support cutoff, and they will easily learn new attack techniques for older versions by analyzing future IE 11 updates", said Craig Young, security researcher for advanced threat protection firm Tripwire's Vulnerability and Exposure Research Team (VERT), in a statement.
