Mozart in the Jungle earned the award for best musical or comedy television series - a curveball win, considering many had never heard of the show and HBO's veteran comedy series Veep, starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus as a notoriously narcissistic president of the United States, won the Emmy for outstanding comedy series in 2015.

Leonardo DiCaprio was an unsurprising best actor in a drama victor for the film, as he went to great physical extremes to portray a trapper struggling to fend off death in the harsh 1800s wilderness.

Christian Slater for his performance in "Mr. Robot" was awarded among the actors competing in the same category. Six shows come in tied for the most nominations with three: "Fargo", "Mr. Robot", "Outlander", "Transparent", "American Crime" and "Wolf Hall".

Oscar Isaac, a star of the box-office behemoth "Star Wars: The Force Awakens", won best actor in a miniseries for HBO's "Show Me a Hero".

Lady Gaga - shunning her trademark sensational outfits for an elegant black evening gown by Versace and a Marilyn Monroe-esque hairdo - shed tears as she won the award for best actress in a made-for-television limited series or movie. Academy Award nominees will be announced Thursday.
