'Mozart in the Jungle' wins comedy series Globe
By Veronica Peterson Jan 11, 2016Some see the Golden Globes, voted on by the 90 or so members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, as predictors of the more prestigious Academy Awards.
5-8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 10, on NBC.
Mozart in the Jungle earned the award for best musical or comedy television series - a curveball win, considering many had never heard of the show and HBO's veteran comedy series Veep, starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus as a notoriously narcissistic president of the United States, won the Emmy for outstanding comedy series in 2015.
He played an astronaut accidently left behind on Mars by his crew.
"Who knew that playing an ex-convict would take me all around the globe?" she said. Jennifer Lawrence's win for Best Performance in Joy also surprised some, as did The Revenant's big win for Best Motion Picture Drama.
Kate Winslet won for her role as Apple employee Joanna Hoffman in Aaron Sorkin and Danny Boyle's Steve Jobs, while Sylvester Stallone won the Best Supporting Actor award for taking on the role of Rocky Balboa once again in Ryan Coogler's Creed.
Among other key categories, best performance by an actress in a drama is between Caitriona Balfe of Outlander, Eva Green of Penny Dreadful, Taraji P. Henson of Empire and Robin Wright of House of Cards.
Amazon's lesser-known show was certainly something of an underdog in the Best TV Comedy category, where it beat out popular programs from HBO, Hulu and Netflix.
Leonardo DiCaprio was an unsurprising best actor in a drama victor for the film, as he went to great physical extremes to portray a trapper struggling to fend off death in the harsh 1800s wilderness.
Christian Slater for his performance in "Mr. Robot" was awarded among the actors competing in the same category. Six shows come in tied for the most nominations with three: "Fargo", "Mr. Robot", "Outlander", "Transparent", "American Crime" and "Wolf Hall".
Oscar Isaac, a star of the box-office behemoth "Star Wars: The Force Awakens", won best actor in a miniseries for HBO's "Show Me a Hero".
Lady Gaga - shunning her trademark sensational outfits for an elegant black evening gown by Versace and a Marilyn Monroe-esque hairdo - shed tears as she won the award for best actress in a made-for-television limited series or movie. Academy Award nominees will be announced Thursday.
