The late Michael Jackson has made history once again. According to the Recording Industry Association of America, which hands out the gold and platinum awards, no other album has ever been certified for that many copies sold.

He adds that it is the first time in six decades that the industry group has been awarding gold and platinum records that an album turned 30 times multi-platinum.

When Thriller was first released back in 1982, it sent the already mega-famous Michael Jackson stratospheric. The album also received writer's credit from Rod Temperton, Steve Porcaro, James Ingram and John Bettis. RIAA says the album has sold more than 100 million copies worldwide.

Seven of the nine tracks from the album became top ten singles while Beat It, Billie Jean and Thriller reached #1.

In the UK, Thriller is the 6th best-selling album ever, overtaken by Adele's 21 in 2012.

As if that wasn't enough, the epic video for Thriller remains the only music video to be inducted into the Library of Congress's National Film Registry.

1996: Michael Jackson arrived in Auckland for two concerts sparking a wave of fan hysteria.

Unsurprisingly, Jackson is also the top-earning dead celebrity, raking in a reported $1 billion since he passed away.

Michael Jackson is really the greatest of all time...all time. "'Thriller' was groundbreaking and electrifying...it was perfection".

"There isn't a place on this planet that hasn't been exhilarated by the music of Michael Jackson".

Branca was cautious about declaring that Jackson and "Thriller" had set an unbreakable record.

This will never happen again: an album certified to have sold 30 million albums in just the US.

"Thriller" scored renewed sales with the release of a reissued 25th anniversary edition in 2008 and Jackson's death a year later.
